I got the idea for “The Hero” while on deployment. Not a rough deployment by any means. I was sent to Canada. Victoria to be precise. It is a nice city with a great tourist area. While walking back to my ship I passed a few grand hotels. Leaving one were a couple in their late eighties. They had to negotiate past some kids on skateboards as they moved through the park in the direction of the touristy and shop heavy harbor front.

Old couples always bring out the romantic in me. I adore my wife and hope that love never dims. It is encouraging to see these older couples together. Spending their twilight years in each other’s company, not because they have to, but because that is all they ever wanted.
